As an seasoned and sought-after piano teacher, Ms. Macheel has been teaching piano lessons since 2001.  Her students range from beginner to advanced of all ages.  From 2004 to 2009, Ms. Macheel served as an Assistant Instructor for the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Secondary Piano Department in Bloomington, Indiana. In 2005, Ms. Macheel joined the faculty of the Young Pianist Program at IU Bloomington as well.  In the summer, 2009, Ms. Macheel gave a series of lectures at the prestigious Wuhan Conservatory of Music (Wuhan China) on American Piano Music and taught lessons in their piano department.

A native of Anqing, China, Shen Liu Macheel began to study piano at the age of four under the tutelage of her father, Shang-Heng Liu. At age six and nine, Ms. Macheel was the First Prize winner at Anhui Province Young Pianist Competition twice.  At twelve years of age she was admitted with highest marks to Wuhan Conservatory of Music High School program, one of the largest and well-respected institutions in China, where her principal teachers were Mann Wu and Ilena Yoshkovitch.

 

In 1999, Shen made her American debut by taking the First Prize in the Brevard Music Center’s Annual Piano Competition becoming the youngest winner in the competition history. She was subsequently described by Douglas Weeks, chair of the Center’s Piano Faculty, as possessing “an exceptional talent with dazzling technique”. 

                                                                                                                                

In 2001, Ms. Macheel was admitted to Brevard College, NC with full merit scholarship, studying with Chrisopher Harding.

She has been awarded Outstanding Performer of the Year many times, as well as Outstanding Student in Fine Arts while at Brevard College. She has also been recognized in national honor societies such as Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK). She graduated Summa cum Laude with The Presidential Award for Achievement and Leadership from Brevard College in May 2004. She continues her Master of Music studies with full Assistantship at the Indiana University - Bloomington, Jacobs School of Music, where her principal teacher is Dr. Karen Shaw. She is currently completing her Doctoral of Music in Performance degree at IU after her completion of Master of Music in May 2006.  She is also serving as the pianist at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Bloomington, IN.
